How it works

Our Injury Care service is an extension to our full service agistment and provides intermediary care at all levels. This service is perfectly suited to horses recovering from illness, injury or surgery and allows horse owners complete piece of mind.

From ailments as simple as a foot abscess or a fence injury in need of a dry stable and bandage changes, through to post surgery care transitioning from veterinary to at home care, this offer has something for everyone. Our highly experienced Team are on site 24/7 and work with strong support from both our Veterinary Team and our very experienced Allied Health Team. Horses are checked four times a day and every need is attended to including a care plan for medication, bandage changes, and controlled exercise.

Soft Tissue Injury Recovery

The majority of our patients are recovering from soft tissue injuries and we are specifically set up to achieve the very best results for these cases. following current research, soft tissue injuries benefit significantly from the use of our Water Treadmill, Chill Spa, Solarium and Dry Treadmill. All horses are offered a full case assessment on arrival and in conjunction with you and your team we build a specific tailored plan for your horse incorporating graduated exercise, shoeing, nutrition, allied health therapies and housing changes as recovery increases. Our housing options are varied to ensure progression through recovery and include rubber or concrete stables, small day yards, and various paddock sizes providing you with the best possible environment for your horses recovery.

360 Degree Epsom Salt Chill Spa Use for Injury

This modality is particularity useful for the acute stage of tendon rehabilitation (when undergoing full box rest). Recent studies show that 3 spa sessions of 10 minutes per week can markedly improve fiber realignment in tendons*, thereby reducing down time and acute recovery time needed before controlled exercise many commence, thus potentially shorting recovery time by weeks.

Further we find the spa extremely beneficial for any hoof or lower limb injuries that benefit from icing i.e- laminits, tendonitis, foot bruising, corns, arthritis, splints and a myriad of other ailments. The Spa offers a much more aggressive form of cooling and anti inflammatory benefits than ice would as the whole limb is submerged in Epsom salt water, including the sole of the foot, and there is significant hydro-static pressure.

These services are offered for both long stay and short stay and even respite care so please do get in touch and see how we can help get your equine athlete back feeling 100%.

360 Degree Epsom Salt Chill Spa

Research shows Chill Spa use can decrease injury recovery time by up to 60%; markedly improve fiber realignment; enable return to competition work quicker and reduce the need for drug therapy*.

Simulating the same process as beach-recovery sessions athletes undergo, our 360 degree Epsom Salt Chill Spa recreates the benefits of the ocean in the safest environment. Spa jets re-oxygenate lower limbs through massage, increasing blood flow for natural repair of soft tissue injury, splints and bone fractures. The gentle massaging effect, along with the increased oxygenation has also been linked to improvements in hoof growth, bruises, synovitis, arthritis and laminitis. Icy cold water assists vascular constriction, helping to flush lactic acid from tissue – reducing swelling and tissue breakdown, and inhibiting enzyme degeneration of tendons after damage. This catalyses the healing process, reducing muscle soreness and improving muscular function and power.

Water is kept at a consistent temperature of 7 degrees however can be chilled as low as 2 degrees. Our water is managed using a combination of several stages of filtration, salt, magnesium (Epsom salts) and temperature. No chemicals (i.e. chlorine) are used to manage our water ensuring healthy skin and hooves and of course we see the benefits of magnesium for soft tissue recovery in every session.

Equine Solarium

Equine solariums produce short-wave infrared heat. The same heat produced by the sun with the benefit of Vitamin D3 but without the harmful UV rays. Vitamin D3, is vital in the absorption of calcium & phosphorus, the building blocks of strong & healthy bones.

Infrared heat increases the metabolic activity of cells resulting in capillary dilation. This in turn increases blood flow through the body bringing oxygen & nutrients to the cells particularly in the superficial muscles of the horse. This increased circulation also improves muscle elasticity, recovery and health, which helps in the reduction of injuries & speeds up the recovery process.

The lights can help to encourage the natural healing process for the likes of abrasions, muscle injury, sore backs or saddle soreness, improve coat condition, reduce tension and induce rapid relaxation.

In addition, infrared light has been shown to stimulate the immune system and provide Vitamin D3, which is vital in the absorption of calcium & phosphorus, the building blocks of strong & healthy bones.

Benefits:

  • Increases circulation and cellular metabolism, immune system and blood supply
  • Increased blood flow to superficial muscles and skin therefore promoting a healthier and shiner coat
  • Warming up muscles, particularly good for horses prone to tying-up or back pain.
  • Drying in winter, leading to less skin conditions.
  • Promotes relaxation and recovery

Shockwave

Administered by our expert Veterinary partners at The Equine Practice, shockwave is a popular technology for treating musculoskeletal problems, soft tissue injuries and bone injuries; Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment used to stimulate the healing process.

By generating high intensity pressure waves pulsing into a specific site or on injured tissue thereby improving blood flow to specific areas, there is better delivery of the elements required for healing. Shockwave combines the benefits of an analgesic effect, reducing inflammation, improving soft-tissue recovery and bone weaknesses. Shockwave Therapy can be used to treat a range of ailments including but not limited to: high suspensory desmitis, sesamoiditis, navicular syndrome, back and sacro-iliac pain.

Therapy typically involves three-five treatments two weeks apart.
